Sorry not sorry for the Norwegian caption. There is simply no English equivalent.

Romjul starts tomorrow, December 27th. Romjul or romhelg are very old Norwegian words (from Norse: rúmheilagr ‘not holy by law’) to describe the days between the Christmas holidays and the end of Christmas (January 6th). Nowadays we usually mean the days between the Christmas holidays and New Year’s Eve.

Romjul is often full of hygge. It might even be extra hyggelig! And we all remember that Hygge is a Norwegian and Danish word for a mood of coziness and comfortable conviviality with feelings of wellness and contentment, right? Hence, we get Romjulshygge when our homes are still decorated with Christmas lights and candles and blankets and the fireplace is crackling and baby, it’s cold outside!

A Peaceful Christmas Morning

I had a wonderful Christmas Eve celebration yesterday. I was preparing Christmas dinner together with my mom, with the Norwegian Broadcasting’s Boys’ Choir singing on TV as the church bells rang in Christmas. In that moment… If I’m not feeling the Christmas spirit before then I’m definitely feeling it now. This choir has been singing in Christmas every year for as long as I can remember. We had a wonderful dinner and then we unwrapped our presents.

Today I’m having a very peaceful Christmas Day. I’m having a white Christmas (almost) every year but we got a lot of snow this week, I’ve already been out this morning shoveling snow in the dog yard. Short legged furbabies need pathways in the snow to be able to move about. After dinner I’ll go out again and shovel the driveway. To those who are starting their Christmas celebration today; enjoy every moment. If you’re celebrating with children, please don’t get drunk. If you’re celebrating by yourself this Christmas, I hope you can find something to be grateful for and that you’re still able to enjoy the holidays. Merry Christmas!
